In light of the recently published UN Environment Report, stating that there is no credible pathway to hit the 1.5C climate target, it is crucial that organisations within travel and tourism industries take responsibility for minimising their impact on climate change. The awards champion destinations and organisations from across the globe in the travel and tourism industry that are working to make better places for people to live in and better places for people to visit. This year’s awards were divided into eight categories: Growing the Local Economic Benefit; Destinations Building Back Better Post-Covid; Sustaining Employees and Communities Through the Pandemic; Reducing Plastic Waste in the Environment; Increasing Diversity in Tourism: How Inclusive is our Industry?; Access for the Differently-Abled: as Travellers, Employees and Holidaymakers; Conserving Water and Improving Water Security and Supply for Neighbours; and Contributing to Cultural Heritage.

The gold winners from each region (Africa, India, Latin America and Rest of the World) progressed to the Global Awards where an international panel of judges selected the winners.
Therme Group was awarded a double gold in both its region and the Global Awards in the ‘Conserving Water and Improving Water Security and Supply for Neighbours’ category. It was recognised for its environmentally and socially sustainable approach towards water.
State-of-the-art technology allows 92% of the water used at Therme Bucharest to be recycled, whilst ozone treatment reduces the need for chemical purifiers. Moreover, through thoughtful community programming Therme helps local residents and tourists to feel more connected to water and by extension, help them become more motivated to safeguard it.
As firm supporters of responsible tourism principles and motivated by the need for environmental change, Therme Group is proud to have been recognised for its work in creating a responsible visitor economy that benefits communities and the planet.
